hee hee a classic. I have seen people wearing lampshades before but this person looks like she has got an arm on the side of her head. :-) Otherwise, a very nice photo.
See, I'm not afraid to show my mistakes, too! I thought the statue in the background might look quite nice ... I just stood in the wrong place! I hesitate to call myself a 'professional', I just do it for a living - but it shows I'm as likely as anyone to get it very wrong!
Yes, I have a Canon D20, upgraded in June when my last camera with flash unit attached committed hari kari. It's 8megapixel memory which helps make the picture sharper for bigger pictures but I have a selection of Canon lens and they're good. Less expensive fancy schmancy cameras can produce sharp pictures though. I actually post fairly low quality pix on here as a rule .. they load faster. You may find in photographic software a feature to sharpen the picture and I do use this, too. Often a picture submitted to me, for forwarding, benefits from a sharpening.
OH yes ..... a good stance when taking the photograph helps!! If you wobble you're more likely to get a slightly out of focus picture. Tuck your elbows in tightly and take a breath, then click. In fact I find the smaller cameras more difficult to hold steady!
Mine stepladder is in the boot of my car, together with my green ankle wellie boots and a tweed hat. I think I've worn the hat once. Oh yes, there's also half a dozen bottles of water, an umbrella and a seaside beach tent. I was thinking about getting a reflective jacket now winter's coming on. Nothing like being prepared!
The usual - ramblings of someone who can't find anything better to do at the time! Former P. A., freelance photojournalist (untrained, just got lucky) on small town paper whose work dried up. Now retired and busy every day.

Do you use a digital camera and what is the secret of taking such sharp photos?

I think this subject deserves its own post! I'll do it.
